Questons about CAELinux was created by Marian
Hello everyone
,
I have just started downloading the CAELinux couple seconds after finding this web page. I always wanted to switch from Windows to Linux based system but there was no proper software which would allow me to do everything I wanted. Before I will delete windows from my PC and put linux on, I would like to ask couple questons regarding this distribution to avoid dissapointment.
Is it fully modular linux distribution like others? So you can install everything you want DVD players, Blender, MP3 player, communicators etc.. Or maybe it is limited to CAE/CAD functions?
Next the interface of the CAD tools, I recently finished the University and been told SolidWorks for 3 years. Is the software included in the distribution similar in operation or maybe more like ANSYS which use one component to modeling, other to simulate, orther to view the resuts?
Compatibility with other software? Can mesh be imported from blender?, SolidWorks, ANSYS, CATIA? Maybe it support some common ones like IGS?
Cheers
Marian

Hi, and have fun with CAELinux.
In response to some of your questions:
Yes, CAELinux is 'just' a regular linux distribution. It's based on Ubuntu and as such, is compatible with everything that works on Ubuntu.
What is different is the great effort put into making many CAE/scientific programs work straight out of the box.
You will NOT find SolidWorks or the like to work on Linux; Linux is lacking in the CAD department, but there are a few options available:
VariCAD is a non-parametric modeler, but pretty capable once you use it a bit. Not free. ABAQUS... is ABAQUS; some CAD capabilities and very good FEA capabilities. Not free.
And others; have a Google at it.
Salomé(MECA), Code_Aster and friends, is where it's at with Linux distributions. High capability FEA, but tough to learn. Free (if your time is worthless
) and in French, but many English tutorials already exists - check the wiki here on the site.
Workflow comparable to Ansys (as you described it)
In short: Solid modelling is not a strong side of Linux in general.
Compatability with other software is pretty good, in that you have IGS, STEP etc. - depending on the software used of course.
Blender can import/export STL as far as I remember, so some possibility of interoperability is there.
That's the short answer for now - I've run out of time for now.
Regards,
Claus

Hi, thanks for your reply.
If I understand correctly when I will install the OS I will not find any 3d parametric modeler preinstaled ?
I do not want to make another topic, so can anyone tell me what is he using for model/mesh creation?
What do you use when for example: You want to create a shelf bracket with specific dimensions and make an FEA simulation on it?
I am asking for compleatly free software
no trials , student editions etc..
Maybe it is a stupid question...??
I know I can google it, but by downloading 20 different programs and not finding any of them usefull i will waste too much time. So maybe there is one specific which will siut my needs straight away

Salome Meca is one of the open source CAE packages included in CAElinux. It is also available for Windows. It has 3D modelling CAD capabilities but it is very crude. In a sense it may be parametric but not like CATIA or Solidworks. There is an option to output a script describing the operations used in creating geometry. Within this script I would imagine one could change various dimensions and then create a new model using the script. However, this script might be in a difficult to read format. I have used simple scripts that were somewhat parametric but they were really simple. What I am proposing above is to create a model with the GUI, output the script, then edit it with a word processor to make it 'parametric'. I did not do this. I created a script from scratch using some simple examples and then changed a variable to produce different outputs until I found one that worked well for what I was doing (I was working with a point cloud from a 3D white light scanning system).
What about dual booting linux and windows?
Cheers,

Here are some examples of parametric geometry creation and meshing in Salome using Python scripts:

As to dualbooting I have bad expierience , I ve been using it couple times in last 5 years to track developement of linux
, it worked fine for 3-6 months but always finished in one of the systems cruch usually windows needed fixining boot partition etc.
No body mentioned FreeCAD which I found in 5 min, it looks like its still in developement stage but it looks good, I will play it around in the evening after work
