Kubuntu will be perfect, i think that also Mint with mate would be a great distro for Caelinux

Sorry for this long wait, I have been very busy this year with my academic job, so I could not advance much with the development of CAELinux 2012..
More over, I would like to move progressively to package developments and setup a PPA, but as I don't have much experience with that, I have to learn and master the whole process. So if there are some experienced "packagers" and PPA contributors out there, it could be nice to setup a small work group and list the packages that need to be developed or updated.
The final goal is to move away from the "1 developer" model to a distributed community...
However, as package development will take much more time than creating an ISO image I will start the real development of the distro in a usual way in the next weeks and will try to finish it for the end of the year.
So the idea is to have an image based on Ubuntu 12.04 desktop 64 bit first and then develop packages in 2013-2014 to update this distro in a proper way.
What do you think? any comment about this ?
Sorry again for this long wait, the project is not dead , just a bit more delayed....
PS: the CAELinux release for the OpenFOAM workshop is a full rebuild of CAELinux (Ubuntu 10.04) with several version of OpenFOAM (1.6-ext and 2.x). I just begun the development of this release but the the final version was heavily tuned and improved by the OF Workshop organizers. Congratulation to them for their great work!

That sounds like a great idea but can we use something else other than Unity/Gnome 3? I don't find them productive. The ppa idea would be great for those who want to use a different fork from Ubuntu like Xubuntu. I also like the idea of a distributed community model, I'll have to finish this thesis asap to learn how to develop for Ubuntu and contribute what I can. I think these are great ideas and I really appreciate the work you have done so far. Thank you.

Hi,
like I wrote here www.caelinux.com/CMS/index.php?option=co...2&Itemid=300025#5784
it would be nice to have the hp-FEM solver Agros2d and the Acousto BEM
Also Baudline would be a nice addon www.baudline.com
AcMus sourceforge.net/projects/acmus/
and the Virtual Terrain Project vterrain.org/ (not acoustics related, but as far as I know, no Linux distro has this one in its repositories).
Thanks,
Davide

I have tried the KDE plasma desktop on ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04 and now am installing 12.10 and will try KDE
on the desktops , quad core 4 , and 8 gig ram all good
on the laptop CAElinux 10.04 + KDE , garbage , WIFI , Video drivers all broken ( amd , radeon card laptop)
On the desktop the KDE environment , very nice. I could customise everything and CAElinux ( on desktop ) everything worked ( nividia card )
I would love to see either Linux mint ,or ubuntu 12,04 with plasma interface ( unity is ok but is still ummm eerr yes well )
or PPAs for the above , there is a PPA team CAE ppa here
looking forward to the next issue
thanks for the hard work and good luck

I wouldn't want to be out of place, but "engineering application" & "package development" sounds a great deal like the Debian Science initiative, and its Engineering set of packages .
Its sentinel page is somewhat more complete .
I am not a specialist, but I understand a debian package can be installed in an Ubuntu environement, right?
If so, maybe it could be relevant to merge somehow these initiatives?
Bests,
Yoh
