What are you running CAELinux on? was created by Jake

When I was still actively using code_saturne, I was using a 1.6 GHz Core Duo laptop with 2GB RAM. I'd like to get a 64-bit quad-core desktop with at least 4 GB of RAM so I can use 2009.
Was just wondering, what have you all been running it on?

Interest: structural mechanics, solar energy (picture at 'my location' shows too little pv panels)

				Hoi Jacob
The following information is from System:
amdaltrax
Ubuntu
release 0.04 (jaunty)
kernel linux 2.6.28-14-generic
gnome 2.26.1
GPU 0: Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT, 1280 x 1024 (not very fancy)
hardware
memory: 3.8 GiB
processor 0: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual core processor 4400+
processor 1: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual core processor 4400+
system status
available disk space: 166.8 GiB
500 GB disk, one partition /cae of 150 GiB for caelinux
I installed caelinux in this partition, not in /opt.
Salome5.1.2 (much nicer gui than 4.x ...) is now 64 bit, I use Code-aster 9.4 from caelinux 2009 and that is stil 32 bit.
First of all I would like to increase my screenpixels, now 1280*1024.
Is there any advantage of 1920*1080 (16*9) over 1680*1050 (16*10) for CAE (CaeLinux) kind of users?
C'est ca.

I was looking at getting one with the AMD 64 X2. Does that setup work relatively well? Have you done any CAE stuff on a slower computer?

@kees Just to correct: if you use Code-Aster binaries from CAELinux 2009, it is compiled in 64bits. Only Salome is in 32 bits in CAELinux 2009...
Concerning on which hardware CAELinux 2009 works best, I would recommend an Intel Core 2 Quad 9550 with 8GB of DDR2, an motherboard with Intel chipset and a Nvidia graphic card (9600GT or higher).
It is the best performance / money / compatibility setup today.
I also have tested it on Athlon X2 4200+ / 4gb ram, several Core2Duo laptops, and finally on a Core i7 940 / 12Gb ram.
For Aster, a Core i7 does not bring so much more compared to a Core2Quad. If you want to invest more money, just buy a fast harddisk (Velociraptor or SSD) and mount it on /tmp: it will really speed up heavy simulations.
To avoid graphical problems in Salome, I really recommend buying a Nvidia card. I have not tested recent ATI/AMD cards but on the previous generation, there was some problems in Salome GEOM & MESH modules...

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately it's not in my student budget to buy an Intel processor, enough though I prefer them.

I understand.. personnally, I own a PC with an Athlon X2 3800+ / 2gb ram & a Core2 Duo laptop with 3Gb Ram... The Core2 Quad 9550 would be what I would buy if I had the budget...
I tested on other computers.. but they are not mine
