For me it's strange because as far as I know, CAELinux is based on Ubuntu, but has additional software related to engeenering, thereof the burning out on USB thru "dd" should work same way like it did with Debian, Ubuntu or other Debian deriative system.

It is based on Ubuntu but the ISO image is rebuilt completely using a set of shell scripts derived from Remastersys / Pinguy Builder.
Canonical does not provide a tool or even a detailed description of how they build their ISO image and thus CAElinux ISO image is built differently from Ubuntu ISO images. Hence the limitations and my recommendations ..

Maybe instead of basing the system on Ubuntu, would be better to build it from scratch, using as base for example LFS ? It's much lighter then Debian, Ubuntu, etc. (in any variants) and it doesn't has any pre-installed software (and desktop), with leaves a full field for customization and making it realy fast and secure
