Graphics cards & Driver versions for Salome 3.2.6/9 was created by JMB
Hello All,
I am trying to resolve some problems with Salome 3.2.6/9 not working on a 64bit Ubuntu 8.04 system. I am trying to build a system
with a high end graphics card capable of handling a model with several 100 thousand elements. I would like to compile a list of Graphics Video cards and the corresponding driver version that work with Salome. I request users to report what cards they are using so we may compile this list. Hopefully it will benefit new users and users contemplating buying new hardware.
Here is my list:
1. ATI Technologies Inc RV515 [Radeon X1300] Fedora 7 32bit
Dual display card, but it has problems shading solid models correctly.
2. nVidia Corporation G80 [GeForce 8800 GTS] (rev a2) Ubuntu Hardy 32bit
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.12-pkg2.run (latest driver, but Xorg does not work in 1024x768 or higher resolution)
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-169.12-pkg2.run (Currently using this version, because newest version has problems)
Salome does not work. Terminal window opens; but no graphics screen!
3. Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G400/G450 (rev 82) Ubuntu Hardy 32bit
Salome works fine (but this is a low end card for large models)
4. nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6600 LE] (rev a2) CAELinux2008.1 32bit
Salome 3.2.9 works fine. Is okay in performance for large problems, but could be better.
5. ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AS [Radeon 9550] Ubuntu Hardy 32bit
Salome 3.2.9 (SalomeMeca) works fine. Is okay in performance for medium size problems.
Please help in this community effort that also helps me. Thank you.
Regards,
JMB

Hello,
Come on users! I am hoping get people to reply stating what cards they have and compile a list of what works for everybody.
This can be easily accomplished by typing "lspci" on a command line of terminal and posting the output lines corresponding to your graphics / video card in this forum along with a comment of what version of Salome you have found it to work with. This is not hard to do.
Hope to hear from some helpful users...

NVIDIA-Linux-x86_32-177-76beta with a 8600GTS 256mb on ubuntu 8.04.1 and even Compiz/Fusion enabled.
Im having screenflicker, but there is only nVidia to blame for their snotty drivers.
Not highend, but I've never experienced it as a bottleneck, either with CAD og normal 3D-modeling.

So I did 'lspci' and got:
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8500 GT (rev a1)
(nothing fancy, I think I bought the card for around 60 euro early 2008)
OS: Linux Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) on 64bits AMD
Salome: 3.2.9 (32 bits, did not compile to 64 bits yet)
I have an occasional problem with SIGFPE but most of the time when I clicked at random on some (sub)menus.
kind regards - kees

Hi JMB,
can you elaborate a little bit more on that: how did you solve the problem with the graphics card? If you can recall what you did, it would be helpfull for others as well, I guess
