Ubuntu 8.04 igs stp was created by Jean Paul Voyat
HI,
I have the following problem.
I'm trying to open in Salome2008 some files saved from a windows version of SolidWorks2008. My system is Ubuntu 8.04.
I tried both igs and stp with the same result: Salome hangs and the only thing to do is to cut the current to the pc (ctl-alt-F1 has no effect, alt-F2 has no effect, esc has no effect, ctl-alt-del has no effect ...).
What is happening ? The post install program gives all positive results ...
I tried to convert to "lf" eof format, no success.
I tried to open the files wit VariCad, they open fine. I saved them with another name (always stp format), still nothing.
I installed and used the program as administrator, nothing changed.
I installed the program in a folder in my home (not in /opt/), nothing changed.
I tried to open the files in VariCad, save in its format, open again, save in .stp, Salome still doesn't open it (and hangs, with all the system).
I really don't know what to do more ....

Code_Aster release : STA11.4 on OpenSUSE 12.3 64 bits - EDF/Intel version

I've never had that happen to me on U8.04 (<- most useless comment)
The only thing I can advise you to do, is to keep the Salomé terminal in front and see if you can see any errors there.
That being said, I think it's highly likely that it's a graphics-driver problem - those are the only ones I know that can completely lock up a system. Try installing a newer or OLDER driver - just to see if this makes a difference.
Otherwise come back here again

Ideed most probably it is your graphics driver.
You could kill the salome session from a ssh session made with another computer.
Also what I experienced is when using the step file from solidworks the meshing faild. When the stp fiel first was loaded ip ProE wildfire 3 and exported as step file I got beter results. Thit could indicate that the stp exporter of solidworks gives different results as the one from ProE

Ok, it was the graphic card driver.
I have a Radeon Mobility X700 and the default driver gave this problem.
I installed the driver supported by Ubuntu community (xorg-driver-fglrx/), but it also gave some problem of visualization.
I finally installed the xorg-driver-fglrx-envy and it works fine !
Thanks a lot for your help

Glad I could help - the only thing I ask in return, is that you post results, experiments and problems here on this forum, so everyone can benefit
