Converting/ meshing issue SolidedgeV18->OpenFoam was created by Frank
Hello,
first I need to say that I am really happy to see a community working on a free CAE pack. I am a mechanical engineer, but with very low experience in CAE.
I need to analyse a nozzle regarding air pressure drop and wanted to use OpenFoam for it.
I faced several issues:
1) Importing IGES files from SolidEdge V18 does not work at all (says "wrong file format...Can't import"). After some errors with subcomponents I finally I got a asssembly STEP file working to be imported.
2) Meshing the imported file created some issues. I used the tutorial for meshing but changed the Netgen parameter of 0,014 to 1 for a first trial in order not to overload my PC with the first shot.
The meshing precess gave me an error showing an exclamation mark in the meshing chapter in salome meca
Can someone explain me how to detect and correct the error I saw with meshing? Please find the STEP source and meshed file files attached in order to understand my issue.
P.S. I cannot load more then 500Kb to the board. So limited the upload to the STEP file only...I can send more data via mail if required...

Post edited by: Frank, at: 2008/12/28 17:44

I think Solid Edge is not the problem, I use it to model parts and assemblies too and the only problem when importing step assemblies in salome is tha t every compnent is imported twice: one time in the 0,0,0 point and one time in the correct position in the assembly.
I think your problem is that the mesh software is not able to create the mesh when surfaces are too little compared to the average leght imposed to it. I created a submesh on your step file and things went ok. I attach the mesh file.

Hi Allesandro,
thanks for your help. Finally I found another way of importing the STP file into Salome: I saved the .PAR file from Solidedge into STP. Then I re-imported it to SE again and saved it once more as STP. I do not understand why, but now it works fine!
Now I got another problem I will post soon in this forum in order to connect the Subject of item to its content...(need to create surfaces at the start/end of the imported nozzle to define in and outlet of the airstrem)

Post edited by: Frank, at: 2008/12/31 11:19
