Strange indeed! what happens when you select the lines in the object browser and what happens when you select 'select all'?

Steve, if I understand well (I haven't read the tutorial), You must explode Your Face_1 into the edges (this is done in the geom-module) before You can select and add one of the edges to be a group

Thank you Claus and Johannes,
I did the following:
1.) Checked the MD5 checksum of my downloaded SALOME-MECA-2009.1-GPL-i386.tgz against the published MD5 sum on this website. They matched. Also, my SM version number is 4.1.4.
2.) Re-ran the installation script according to the instructions.
3.) Opened a new Geometry file and followed the example that Kees provided. There is one slight typographical error in the example in the line creation part -- it says to open New Entity>Basic>Point when the points have already been created. I think it should read NewEntity>Basic>Line.
4.)I created the Face_1
5.)I tried the SelectAll button and it populates the entry box with the numbers "3 6 8 10" The Add and Remove buttons become active, and I can remove entries, but not add them (see screen shot below).
I don't know what the numbers mean. I've attached a screen shot of the current new project and the Group entry screen. I don't see any object in the hierarchy numbered "10". The others don't make sense to me.
6.) I then tried your suggestion, Johannes, of exploding the Face_1 into edges. It did this and now there are 4 additional edge objects listed in the left hand window. However, attempting to select Face-1 to add line objects to the group still doesn't work -- only the Select All button is available.
I don't understand why my operation would be different than anyone else's. Claus, are we running the same version of SM? 4.1.4 for i386?

"attempting to select Face-1 to add line objects to the group still doesn't work"
You must SELECT an EDGE (generated by the exploseion of Face_1, non select Face_1) to add it
