Hi Claws,
Thanks for all the pointers!
Could you explain if there is and easy way get my groups to carry accross into the compound model from the individual meshs? I had started to manually re-define them face by face, but in the case of the rail i cant as the wheel is in the way...
Thanks,
Kev

As far as I remember, groups should be carried over. Perhaps you need to change from 'Unite' for identical groups to 'Rename'.
Anyway, I remembered an easier way to do it: Once you have imported the two STEP files, select both and click New Entity->Build->Compound, then assign your groups. Then mesh
It's been a while since I've used Salome, so it's free from memory
/C

Hi Claws,
Many thanks for your assistance, I have had to un-refine my analysis as I have run out of time. I have meshed the rail alone and applied a pressure to a single element face for the load and carried out a static analysis, not ideal but will probably do for my needs... I will keep trying to get the contact working regardless...
I do have a question about post processing in salome, but will post in the correct forum, again thanks for your help.
