I am trying to install Salome-meca on my ubuntu 8.10.
The installation seemed to go well and I got the following message filled with "OK" messages (all of them sayed ok).
only when I try to run Salome-Meca I get errors:

It may be a problem with the shell..
try to install the "csh" package. I remember that some scripts where not functionning "out of the box" on Ubuntu.

PS: if you are running Ubuntu 64bit, you should also install the 32bit compatibility libraries by the way:
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

I installed the 32bit libraries, but still there are some problems.
Salome launches with some warnings, and besides it works with problems:
1. In the geometry module - the lower right quarter of the viewer is empty and grey.
2. problems defining geometrical entities (cant input the points).
3. some times the the viewer turns grey until I click on it.
the info I get from the shell is:
szahib@szahib-laptop:~/Desktop/SALOME-MECA-2009.1-GPL$ ./runSalomeMeca
